Study & Research in Greece

Many foreign students choose to study in Greece because they are drawn to classical civilisation as the one by which all other civilizations are measured. Its routes are still present in modern-day Greece. Many foreign archaeological institutes organise relevant full time academic and research programs for graduates. Classical and Modern Greek studies programs for undergraduates are offered in English by various American universities and colleges. And Orthodox Christian Theology and Biblical studies can be pursued at university level in Athens and Thessaloniki.

Greece stands at the geopolitical crossroads of Europe, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean. Studying in Greece opens employment opportunities in business, commerce, finance, technology, travel, banking, journalism, media, education, law, and gives a competitive edge in many professions. Area and comparative cultural studies, with a European, Balkan or Mediterranean focus, are often offered in English through relevant university study schemes. Business and IT study programmes are also offered in English at universities and private colleges, attracting a growing number of foreign students. Researchers who wish to move to Greece may look at the National Research Foundation Researcher's Mobility Portal for assistance, information on fellowships and grants, and useful links.

STUDYING IN GREECE

Many foreign students choose to study in Greece for various reasons, one of them being the attraction to classical civilisation as that by which all other civilizations are measured. Its roots are still present in modern-day Greece. A number of foreign archaeological institutes organise relevant full time academic and research programmes for graduates.

Modern Greek is easily recognisable as the language of Plato and the New Testament. The Greek language, whether ancient, biblical or modern, can be ideally studied in a Greek speaking environment. Greek language courses are offered at the universities of Athens, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, and Crete.

Interdisciplinary programmes covering Modern Greek literature, culture, history and politics  have been established worldwide. Many of these programmes also sponsor regular conferences in Greece and elsewhere, offer graduate fellowships, endowed lectures, and publish Greek Studies journals and books.

Courses of Classical and Modern Greek studies for undergraduates are offered in English by various American universities and colleges. Orthodox Christian Theology and Biblical studies can be pursued at university level in Athens and Thessaloniki.

Greece stands at the geopolitical crossroads of Europe, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean. Studying in Greece, among other things, offers employment opportunities in business, commerce, finance, technology, travel, banking, journalism, media, education, law, and gives  a competitive edge in many professions.

Area and comparative cultural studies, with a European, Balkan or Mediterranean focus, are often offered in English through relevant university study schemes. Business and IT courses  are also offered in English at universities and private colleges, attracting a growing number of foreign students.

INTERNATIONAL HELLENIC UNIVERSITY

The International Hellenic University (www.ihu.edu.gr), based in Thessaloniki, is Greece's public university where teaching is going to be exclusively in English. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from three faculties: Economics & Business Administration, Humanities and Science & Technology, while its Executive MBA programme starts on February 2008.

Set to become one of Europe's foremost research institutions, it is focused on attracting leading academics and outstanding students from Southeast Europe and across the world. The University’s curriculum was presented on November 16th simultaneously in Athens, Istanbul and Sofia.

INTELECTUAL CAPITAL

Research Opportunities

Greece’s research institutes, university laboratories and the private sector are forging relationships with partners from around the world, aiming to meet challenges in areas such as medicine, energy, the environment and information and communication technologies (ICT). Greek researchers have successfully attracted funding from multiple sources, including EU Framework Programmes for Research & Technology and figure prominently in areas such as ICT, new material development, molecular technology, optics and biotechnology.

Researchers who wish to move to Greece may look at the National Research Foundation Researcher's Mobility Portal for assistance, information on research policies, fellowships and grants. The Practical Guide for Foreign Researchers is an essential manual for non-Greek scientists who visit and work in the country, assisting them in all matters.

High quality university postgraduate schemes offered in English, include the Athens University of Economics and Business - International MBA (www.imba.aueb.gr), the University of Athens Doctoral Programme in Economics (www.uadphilecon.gr), and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration - Master's Degree in Southeast European Studies (www.pspa.uoa.gr).

Rising Up the Ranks

Greece’s rise in terms of intellectual capital is becoming all the more evident, following the University of Athens’ (UoA) leap in the recently published  Times Higher - QS World University Rankings. The THES-QS World University Rankings constitute a composite measure, in which six criteria (e.g. peer review, citations/faculty, faculty/student ratio) are added together to produce an overall evaluation table and Athens University has reached the 106th place Europe-wide and the 248th worldwide, up by 260 places, given that it ranked 508th only a year ago.

According to a recent statement of UoA’s rector Professor Christos Kittas to the “TA NEA” newspaper (12.11.2007), this success is mainly attributed not only to the high-level of the academic staff but also to the outstanding performance of graduates who continue their Master or PhD studies abroad and are a constant proof of the real value of their first degree obtained in Greece.

CERTIFICATE OF ATTAINMENT IN GREEK

The Centre for the Greek Language (www.greeklanguage.gr), a co-ordinating and advisory body of the Ministry of Education on issues of language education and teaching of Greek to non-Greek speakers, holds annual exams for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek (Εξετάσεις για την πιστοποίηση ελληνομάθειας).

NEW RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS

The search for research organisations and individual researchers from Russia and Eastern European countries involved in science and cutting edge technology is now possible thanks to a new database available at: http://researchers.nisnest.gr.

This new service is particularly useful for identifying partners from Russia and Eastern European countries in order to submit joint proposals under the EU 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technology Development. The database has been developed as part of the NIS-NEST project, an EU-funded project coordinated by the National Documentation Centre which fosters cooperation between the EU, Russia and Eastern European countries, and involves organisations from Greece, France, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldavia.
